FAQs

Where is Bitton's Extra Virgin Olive Oil sourced from?

Bitton's Extra Virgin Olive Oil is sourced from premium olive-growing regions renowned for producing exceptional quality oil. We select oils that meet strict standards for acidity, flavour, and nutritional content. The focus is always on quality and authenticity - delivering genuine extra virgin olive oil that honours traditional production methods rather than cutting corners for price.

Can you cook with extra virgin olive oil?

Yes, quality extra virgin olive oil is excellent for cooking. Despite myths, good EVOO has a smoke point around 190-210°C - suitable for sautéing, roasting, and even shallow frying. We use it daily at Bitton's cafés for most cooking applications. Save the most expensive bottles for drizzling, but don't hesitate to cook with quality EVOO. It adds flavour while providing health benefits.

Is extra virgin olive oil healthy?

Yes, extra virgin olive oil is exceptionally healthy. It's rich in monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, and polyphenols, which support heart health and reduce inflammation. EVOO contains more beneficial compounds than refined olive oils because it's unprocessed. Research consistently links EVOO consumption to better cardiovascular health. It's a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, one of the healthiest eating patterns studied.

Does extra virgin olive oil go off?

Yes, even EVOO can go rancid over time. Quality EVOO lasts 18-24 months from bottling when stored properly. Once opened, use within 3-6 months for optimal flavour and health benefits. Store in a cool, dark place in a tightly sealed container. Rancid EVOO smells waxy and tastes bitter. Light and heat accelerate degradation, so proper storage is essential.

What is in extra virgin olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil contains only one ingredient: cold-pressed juice from olives. Quality EVOO is pure, unrefined, and unblended. It's rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (primarily oleic acid), vitamin E, polyphenols, and antioxidants. Unlike refined oils, EVOO retains all the natural compounds from olives, providing both exceptional flavour and nutritional benefits. Nothing added, nothing removed.

Is extra virgin olive oil fattening?

EVOO is calorie-dense at 120 calories per tablespoon, but these are healthy calories from monounsaturated fats. Research shows that despite high calorie content, EVOO in a Mediterranean diet pattern is linked to healthy weight maintenance. The key is using it to replace less healthy fats rather than adding it on top of existing fat intake. Quality matters more than quantity.

Why does Bitton olive oil contain turmeric and black pepper?

In true Bitton style, we've elevated this premium Australian olive oil with the exotic warmth of turmeric and the subtle heat of black pepper. The combination enhances the oil's natural character while adding distinctive flavour complexity.
